Beyond Human Grit
Romans 5:1-5
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
As Christians, our hope is not anchored in the shifting circumstances of our lives. It is anchored in the immediate, transformative life of Christ and the eternal promise to come. Romans 5:1-5 reminds us that since we have been justified through faith, we possess a peace with God that is internal and objective—regardless of external chaos. Because we are reconciled to the Father, we have everything we need to face life’s greatest hardships, whether they be persecution, loss, or personal trial. However, the way we survive these trials looks completely different than the way the world handles hardship. It requires a radical shift in how we view both our endurance and the purpose of our pain.
Moving Past Human Grit
The endurance Paul speaks of in Romans is not a product of human grit. It is not the simple psychological ability to "dig deep" and push through a difficult season. Instead, it is a supernatural endurance. When we are at our weakest and face life's greatest horrors, the Holy Spirit holds us through circumstances we could never survive on our own. True spiritual endurance is not about us holding onto God; it is about the Spirit holding onto us.
The Refining Tool of Affliction
While God is not the author of our pain, He is the master of repurposing it. He uses the heat of affliction as a refining tool for our sanctification, surfacing the impurities hidden deep within our souls—our deepest insecurities, hidden idols, and secret fears.
By emptying us of our self-reliance, suffering forces us into a posture of total dependence on Him. This is exactly how Christian character is "proven." As our faith is tested, we see God work in real-time, teaching us that our lives are no longer dominated by fear but completely secured in His hand. Nothing in this life can ultimately destroy us because our assurance is found in our justification alone.
Maturing into the Image of Christ
We emerge from the fire looking more like Jesus, who was the ultimate model of suffering and trust.
This painful, refining process culminates in a hope that does not disappoint. God’s love is poured directly into our hearts through the Spirit, proving that our security is not based on what happens to us, but what God is doing in us.
